We Tried Shake Shack’s New Breakfast Menu

If the line that stretches all around Madison Square Park in New York City is any sign that people absolutely love Shake Shack’s hamburgers and fries, chicken sandwiches and of course milkshakes.

They’re willing to stand in line, and brave the frigid (or burning!) temperatures to grab the ShackBurger or brownie milkshake.

However, the Shake Shack is the original Shake Shack is upping its famous menu by making a move into the breakfast business with new Breakfast sandwiches, cakes as well as morning beverages like cold brew espresso and orange juice.

Breakfasts are served at certain transit stations: JFK airport, Grand Central terminal, Fulton Center, and Penn Station in New York, Union Station in Washington, D.C. and at the Dubai Airport since 2014, however, it will be available from their Madison Square Park location starting on May 22nd.

Our Eat This We Eat This, Not This! staffers got our hands on the new breakfast options and they’re a lot better than McDonald’s along with Dunkin’ Donuts a run for their money.

Sausage, Egg N’ Cheese

Per sandwich: 480 calories, 29, grams of fat (12 g saturated) 140 mg sodium, 28, grams of carbs (3 seven grams of sugar) 28 g protein

Breakfast sandwiches from Shake Shack is served on toasted, non-GMO potato buns which is the same bun that it uses for their signature hamburgers. It immediately makes the sandwiches more fluffy texture, in contrast to the more dry sandwiches other fast food chains serve for breakfast.

The sausage patty is robust and well-seasoned which gives the sandwich a more distinct flavor. The egg is also shaped like an actual egg, as opposed to other breakfast eggs from fast food which look… suspicious.

The overall impression is that the sandwich appears to contain better-quality ingredients, which is evident in the flavor. At around 480 calories as well as 29 grams of fat in a pop, it’s certainly an investment.

Bacon, Egg N’ Cheese

The Bacon, Egg N' cheese sandwich from Shake Shack

A sandwich contains: 350 calories, 18 grams fat (8 grams saturated) 10,50 mg of sodium, 26, grams sugar, 3 g fiber (3 g fiber 5 grams of sugar) 24 g protein

The moment we opened the sandwich, we were able to smell the aroma of savory emanating through the sandwich. “It smells good. It smells like breakfast,” Daniel our Social Media Manager and professional taste tester, said. So far, we’re off to a great beginning.

The potato bun in The Bacon, Egg N’ Cheese remains soft, which gives it a pleasant texture. The sandwich also taste sweeter than biscuits and English muffin. Shake Shack says they use “all-natural applewood smoked bacon,” that looks good thin slices rather than the thin, fat slices that fast food restaurants attempt to disguise as bacon.

They also make use of cage-free eggs with a consistent texture; they are not overcooked or undercooked which can make a big difference in the overall flavor that the sandwiches.

With just 220 calories with an additional 24 grams protein it’s certainly healthier over other bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches available on the market. To find out how it compares to other breakfast options at fast food restaurants look at every Fast Food Breakfast Item — Rated.

Apple Turnover

The Apple Turnover pastry on Shake Shack

Per turn 325 calories, 15 grams of fat (5 grams saturated) 443 mg sodium. 46 grams of carbs (3 10 grams of sugar) and 4 grams of protein.

The apple turnover appears similar to McDonald’s apple pie only larger and more dense. It’s made of a thick but flaky dough. One of our staffers stated that the dough was more savory. The filling, in general, isn’t overly sweet and leaves little mess, which is perfect to enjoy breakfast pastry in the rush.

However, when you’re eating 46 grams carbohydrates and just 3g of fiber, and the 4 grams of protein in this, it’s bound to raise your blood sugar, only to fall off later. Not the best option for those looking to avoid an early-morning slump.

Based on our taste test our taste tester, this strawberry cake was a great texture and was extremely soft and moist. The cake was sweeter than the average and the crumble offered the perfect mixture of salty and sweet.

It certainly tasted fresh baked, particularly when compared to other pastries that are preservative-laden at other fast food establishments or at the supermarket. This is the reason why baked goods make our list of 150 worst packaged foods on the market in America.
